What’s a fear you’ve overcome — and how did you do it?
I was always very afraid to speak in public.
For years, the thought of speaking in front of people made my stomach drop.
Even in a small meeting, my voice would shake. My heart would race like I was running. I avoided presentations, skipped chances to talk, and told myself “I’m just not that kind of person.”
The fear wasn’t about the words. It was about being judged. What if I forgot what to say? What if people laughed?
The turning point came when I realized: nobody expects perfection. They just want honesty.
Here’s the 3 things that actually helped me overcome it:
- Start small, not on stage
I didn’t jump to a 500-person crowd. I started by speaking up once in a WhatsApp group, then answering 1 question in a small room. Small wins killed the fear slowly. - Prepare, but don’t memorize
I stopped trying to remember every word. Instead, I wrote 3 key points on my phone. If I knew my 3 points, I could talk for 5 minutes or 50 minutes. That removed the panic. - Speak to 1 person, not the crowd
When I finally had to talk, I picked 1 friendly face in the audience. I talked to them. Everyone else just felt like background noise. Suddenly, it felt like a normal conversation.
I haven’t “cured” it 100%. I still get nervous. But now the fear doesn’t stop me.
If you’re afraid of public speaking too, start today. Record a 1-minute voice note. Post a video on your status. The fear shrinks every time you use your voice.
